Our Story
Built Because Nonprofits Deserved Better
Charity Charge started in 2015 with a simple observation. Stephen Garten, volunteering with Hill Country Conservancy in Austin, realized the credit card rewards he never used could be pointed at causes that needed them. That idea became a consumer card in 2016.
Then the nonprofit CFOs and executive directors who tried it asked a harder question: why does a 501(c) organization still need a board member’s personal credit to get a card? We rebuilt the company around that problem. Today the Charity Charge Corporate Card and Business Credit Card are underwritten to the organization, with no annual fee, and more than 3,000 nonprofits run their spending on them.
We are a Public Benefit Corporation based in Austin, and we still run on the one rule Stephen’s father Larry left him: always do the right thing.
